“Even though the 3DS is currently Nintendo's saving grace, developing a games-only portable device is becoming more and more of a risk in this day and age.”
This is just my response to this quote.
On the contrary, I’d buy a console or handheld if it were a simpler device that does what it needs to do—play games. Making it a smartphone, survival kit, streaming device, automobile, and bathroom all in one is more annoying than anything. We’ve already got the streaming device, automobile, a bathroom, and smartphones(…though possibly not a survival kit), and we’re buying it because we want to play games. So if I had to give Nintendo advice: Just make a modern gamecube and a modern gameboy. Just give us buttons, control sticks, and D-pads. I don't want to wave a $50 stick around while standing up and holding a nun-chuck just to play Super Mario Galaxy. I just want simple, responsive controls. The bold move to take in the market today is practical cost-effectiveness and room for growth, not flashy products designed to grab headlines. The hololens is just an Occulus Rift with a Kinect stuck in front of it supplied with the software of Kinect Party and different graphics. Super Mario Sunshine will always be my favorite Mario game because it was well designed, not because of motion controls or HD graphics. The ultra-polished, characterless, dull graphics we get these days is unpleasant. “It’s HD!!!!!!111!” isn’t an excuse for laziness, but stuff like that is nonstop. Why be creative and make a good game when you can just DLC people to bankruptcy on basic features(DLC and the like can exist, but it can’t be “pay a monthly membership to use basic online multiplayer with YOUR wi-fi”. I’m looking at you, Xbox 360), hype AWFUL or non-noteworthy games until people just buy them because it's what their friends have(I'm looking at you, mobile market), or make games super-addictive with what borders on psychological engineering(I'm looking at you, mobile market, clicker, and social games).
That is a good question, why?
Decency. Passion. Having a hint of a SOUL. So do us all a favor, and don't just pander to the drug addicts in my science class who probably think the Earth is flat.
