I think I know what I need to improve. I need a more personal, defined tone or style besides trying very, very hard to make it look "good enough" so that instead of odd little patterns and errors being obstacles to overcome, they'd add to the design....

That didn't translate well from thought. To put it simply, I need to figure out my own theme other than "MS Paint".
